ABSTRACT

Schools vary enormously in size and atmosphere according to their geographical location and a host of other factors. The rural primary school, for instance, presents an entirely different audience to that in a large city high school. The crucial factor in planning music for children and young people is to cater for the right age range. Concerts in primary schools are welcomed by the staff, who will want as many children as possible to benefit from taking part. The phrase “with learning difficulties” covers those children who, for a variety of reasons, are regarded as unable to take advantage of mainstream education. Education has variously been described as ‘an encounter with excellence’ and ‘an initiation into worthwhile activities’. ‘Live Music Now’, which helps to develop vital learning skills, gives children an insight and extra perspective to their lives and brings joy and magic into their world, is certainly both of these things.
