ABSTRACT

Adult Training Centre's are run by the local social services, not by education authorities. Staff therefore work an industrial year with far fewer holidays than education establishments. One concert will not change a client’s life but it can provide staff with valuable spin-off material. A concert can be looked forward to, experienced and so, so important, remembered. It is hard to imagine an audience more diverse and complex. In terms of age, experience and understanding the difference from client to client can be enormous. People with learning difficulties can easily become confused. Some clients, particularly in their late teens and early twenties, may not have had the opportunity to develop social skills. Quality, rhythmic energy, sonority can appeal across any barrier. There is nothing wrong with playing tunes which people know, but there is nothing like the quality of experience which can be shared when new sounds and textures are discovered.
