ABSTRACT

The improvement of the interpretation of thin-section analysis is considered as the next step in the research of wear of rock cutting tools to get hold of the factors controlling wear. Thin-sections can easily be interpreted differently, because the interpretation is subjective, and because the criteria of the determination of petrographic parameters, which are considered to be relevant to wear, are not clear at this stage. Wear is a system dependent process and therefore many parameters of different nature and origin affect the processes of wear. In practice, for each project different parameters may be of importance and therefore a thorough analysis should be carried out before a (quantitative) estimation of the expected rate and type of wear can be made.
