ABSTRACT

Experiments have been designed to investigate the change and type of wear mode by variation of the displacement rate of a chisel into different types of rock with two types of chisel steel. During cutting of rock by a rotary cutting machine like a cutter suction dredger or a rock cutting trencher the feed gradually increases when the chisel proceeds along its arc-shaped cutting path. Besides, the momentary feed varies with the formation of rock chips of different sizes. Initial experiments have been carried out to modify the boundary conditions of the test and to determine the repeatability of the test. The shape of the chisel, for example, has been designed in such a way, that the initial shape of the chisel does not change much as the wear-flat wears away during testing.
