ABSTRACT

The principal steps of designing a space vehicle based on the deployable, large structure has a number of features associated with the nature of the resulting product. Just as in designing other types of space vehicles, the given design process is started from analysing the application, establishing the product efficiency criteria and requirements emerging from the application. The mission duration imposes requirements for providing strength and reflectivity of sail material exposed to space environment and operation effects. All systems of the solar sailing vehicle are imposed requirements for the enhanced reliability likewise a free-flying unmanned spacecraft designed for a long-term service life. In designing the application specific space vehicles, such an important criterion as a cost for one kilogram of payload placed in orbit, is taken as a cost for one kilogram of scientific hardware to be used for obtaining scientific data, or solving any specific task. A number of important tasks exists with no requirements for the structure re-orientation.
