ABSTRACT

This chapter expands on the concepts and methods presented in Chapter 4 by examining an example quantitative research report. Following the full text of the sample article, a commentary explores its purpose and audience, its structure, the study design, the results, and the inferences drawn from those results. The quantitative study conducted by de Jong and his co-authors meets the requirements of internal validity because it operationalizes the concept that it wants to examine. The two studies also meet the requirements of external validity because the test environment, including the sample population studied, is sufficiently like the “real world” environment. Finally, the inferences that the authors have drawn from their results are reliable because of the very low probability of error.
