ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on diseases of mulberry and their symptoms, pathogen characters, epidemiology, and management. The diseases covered are powdery mildew, leaf rust, Cercospora leaf spot, Pseudocercospora leaf spot, Anthracnose, Fusarium root rot, Sooty mould, bacterial leaf spot, and mosaic. Mycelium is superficial upon the lower surface of the leaf, septate with special intracellular haustoria and globed adhesive appresorium. The haustoria are finger like, irregular shaped. Conidiophores are ovuluriopsis type, straight, erect and hyaline. Conidia are subclavate, aseptate, solitary and hyaline. The pathogen is ectoparasitic, which obtains nutrients by haustoria. It reproduces by initially asexual, when matures follow sexual process. Mycelia produced in both internal and external part of host. Mycelia are filamentous and sepate. Conidiophores are dark, fasciculate, geniculate at the point of spore production. Conidia are simple, obclavate, hyaline and multiseptate.
