ABSTRACT

Isaac or, as most of the players called him, Doc had a high status both on and off the field. He was a prominent doctor in the community (hence his nickname) and owned properties in other parts of the island as well as plots of land around Black River. Doc was a player on the older team but crossed midway through fieldwork to play with the younger side. In contrast to Freddy and Cavin, he played more selfish football. The moment the game began, he would jog to the opposition goal mouth and stand there for the rest of the match. Some of the younger players approached him for advice and for temporary loans. He recognized that it was difficult for them to repay the money he lent and was happy to help those he felt were in need without expecting repayment. Nevertheless, Doc wanted to help the younger men succeed and enjoyed socializing with them.
