ABSTRACT

Sympathy for a particular style of knowing is crucial to a field with both anthropology and design as part of its identity. Within the design research community, a passionate debate about styles of knowing dominates as the field struggles to free itself from the shackles of other disciplines and strives to be taken seriously on its own merits through a research process that takes to heart the contribution of design. Expansion of the territory of work suggests that the role of the researcher will not only include seeing as a form of engagement, but also making. The game provided a slightly more transparent and tangible approach to incorporating theoretical concepts in design research. Design and anthropology, like many fields, has problematized the relation between theory and practice as one between practitioners in the field and those building conceptual walls, as it fights for a place and funding in a crowded university.
