ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how the culture is affected by two facts: more of the subculture’s members are increasing their heroin use; the control of heroin use and distribution is seen as a big problem in Norrkoping, and established society’s attempts to control the subculture are intensifying. It is a threat, from both within and without. The chapter deals with how the culture is formed in answer to this threat of inopportune intrusion. Time perspectives, for those who are heavily dependent on heroin and who live at the bag level, are short and focused on one thing; heroin. To ‘live at bag level’ means never earning much money and having a very short-term drug plan. Those who come to Enrique live at ‘bag level’ and every day is about getting the resources to buy heroin. Enrique, on the other hand, has continuous access and does not need to ring dealers, go shoplifting or steal from friends.
