ABSTRACT

Many aspiring bush musicians make their debut as performers before larger audiences in this circuit of community concerts, and it is in this hinterland music scene that most community bands and musicians establish and maintain their regional reputation. Accordingly, invitations to most Sports Weekends are usually limited to Aboriginal communities and organizations, and are issued by word of mouth through Aboriginal networks. The fact that these events often are announced a week or just a few days before they take place, and may be cancelled, postponed and then on again within the same time frame, also excludes most people who are not part of an Aboriginal network. The Teenage Band no doubt collected a few cross-regional Aboriginal social points by generously and professionally helping out a fellow musician and Warlpiri countryman.
