As artists, however, they know that they can create deeply moving visual experiences with a pragmatic and systematic approach to image creation to be a composition. This chapter covers compositional elements: In an image, a compositional element can be: The dominant compositional elements have the most impact on the viewer's impression of the photograph. The chapter shows that great photographs are often a splendid tango between composition and content. It introduces each compositional element one-byone, using photographs by way of illustration. The chapter discusses some of the compositional elements seen in any particular image. Closed compositions are straightforward: content is shown in its entirety and the composition feels conclusive. Many compositional elements guide the viewer's attention: for example, leading lines pull the viewer's eye through the image and the rule of thirds also helps the viewer to move around the image.
