ABSTRACT

As the word production suggests, digital post-production is a complex process requiring a large and varied skill set. Post-Production I introduced file organization and image adjustment/enhancement. This chapter explores retouching and compositing, tasks typically undertaken in Adobe Photoshop. Two things about Photoshop make it a complex piece of software to conquer: its incredibly robust functionality and its long history. The former, of course, is good for the user, but facilitating a wealth of functions requires all kinds of tools and interfaces which must be mastered. Photoshop’s interface is called a workspace, a name suggesting a lab or a car shop, which is not far from the truth. A lab or shop is loaded with tools, displays, and the specimen to be worked on. Photoshop is complex: It has evolved over a 30-year attempt to cover all things post-production. Mastering such a monumental program also requires an evolutionary process.
