ABSTRACT

Blaagaarden is an old working-class neighborhood. Residents today are mostly immigrants and second-generation immigrants, ethnic Danish working-class families, and students. The social housing area is centrally located and close to the lakes in Copenhagen in the vibrant inner-city neighborhood of Noerrebro, the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in Denmark. Hanan al-Noerrebro means affection, care, sympathy, or fondness in Arabic and is borrowed from Laura Marks’s book title Hanan al-Cinema, affections for the moving image. In the eighteenth century the neighborhood of Noerrebro was way out in the countryside. Noerrebro grew as people moved out from the crowded old city, and people living in the countryside migrated to the capital to find work and a better livelihood. It became a workers’ neighborhood with very small workers’ apartments.
