ABSTRACT

On February 14, 2015, a fatal shooting occurred at the event “Art, Blasphemy, and Freedom of Speech” at “Krudttonden” in Copenhagen. Many ethnic Danes, though, for their part, felt offended that Muslims who had been welcomed into Denmark would disregard one of the principles held highest in the country: the freedom of speech. In nonsexual terms, God is desired, and oneness with God is desired by some, while for others this is “hovmod” believing that oneness with God is possible. One night, during a late-night socializing in a Blaagaarden apartment, it struck author that four of the six women in the company had fresh haircuts and their hair newly colored. Samah’s messages and arguments remind author of another young woman, Manal, and her use of popular songs to help describe the longing, desire, and frustration of social obligation.
