After the harvest of preceding crop, the field should be ploughed deep with a mould board plough or disk plough. The ploughed field should be left exposed to the sun. A cultivator with wooden plank will make the surface smoother. The implement could be used for deep tillage upto a depth of 40 cm for opening hard soil pan. This is tractor mounted implement (35 to 45 hp). Ridger is used to form ridges required for maize sowing in well tilled soils. A ridger, commonly called as a ridger plough, consists of a single share and double mould board attach to steel or wooden beam. Normally, there is a provision to vary width of mould board. The ridges need to be compacted before planting for stability. This operation is done by ridge packer. For forming broad beds and line sowing simultaneously, the crops like groundnut, sorghum, maize and pulses. It is suitable for low rainfall regions.
