ABSTRACT

With the development of new technology, the dryland maize has shown promise in certain non – traditional environments. It has already become a popular crop in the semi-arid red soils of Bangalore region. Suitable land treatments are very essential for maize crop in order to achieve efficient use of applied inputs. The choice of these measures depends largely upon soil and rainfall characteristics. Depending upon the rainfall distribution, maize can be grown either in an intercropping system or in a double cropping system. In black soil at Jhansi and Indore which receive low rainfall during post – rainy season, intercropping system is found to be more assured. The relative advantage of hybrid over the local maize has been varying from place to place. Based upon the trials carried out during the last decade, the various locations can broadly be divided into two categories.
