ABSTRACT

This chapter is to acquaint the reader with the application of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and current genetic identification techniques used in criminal investigation. DNA laboratories are inspected and accredited by American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board. In addition to the FBI Laboratory located in Quantico, Virginia, several private corporations perform forensic DNA analysis. Within a single individual, the sequence of the DNA molecules is the same in every nucleated cell that makes up the person. Therefore, any body fluid or tissue sampled within a single individual will yield the same forensic DNA profile. One of the most important relationships within the forensic DNA laboratory is that with the latent fingerprint section. The two forensic disciplines must work together for the benefit of latent print and DNA evidence because DNA profiles can be developed from fingerprints left on items of evidence.
