ABSTRACT

With a keen sense of timeliness Resources for the Future has brought together this set of essays by scholars, planners, and administrators concerned about the future use of urban space. Broad areas of consensus among the authors are punctuated by sharp conflicts, divergences of opinion, and contrasting values. I shall make it my responsibility to ask, "What do these reflections add up to?" and to offer in answer some observations of my own which have been stimulated by these essays.
