ABSTRACT

Psychologist. Teacher. Priest. Physical therapist. Physician. Musician. Theologian. Philosopher. Dancer. These occupations are all specialized in our culture, requiring years of devoted training in one focused area or another. Among indigenous peoples and ancient traditions, many of these discrete jobs are integrated into the single role of shaman, a person who is expected to have a working knowledge of botany, physiology, theology, and performing arts, as well as in social work, psychiatry, and counseling.
