ABSTRACT

These strategies are in marked contrast to some indigenous contexts, where they do the exact opposite: Healing takes place within a state of hyperarousal. Whether in a rural African American church, a Guarani tribal ceremony, or a Zulu dance, the goal of the healing rituals is to get people even more excited-emotionally, physically, and spiritually aroused to an altered state of consciousness. This has been one of Keeney’s most stunning discoveries from the time he started participating in global healing traditions.
