ABSTRACT

I assumed that the head of a large empire possesses a world vision, some sense that his policies coincide with a linguistic roadmap that goes beyond phrases such as “they hate us,” “bring ’em on,” and “we love freedom.” One could become frustrated, however, trying to find connections between President Bush’s post-9/11 words and the big issues, such as the future of the environment or the fate of more than half the world’s desperately poor people.
