ABSTRACT

I’m Dancing! (1948; co-directed with George Abbott), The Pajama Game (1954; co-directed with Abbott), Peter Pan (1954), Bells Are Ringing (1956; co-choreographed with Bob Fosse), West Side Story (1957; co-choreographed with Peter Gennaro), Gypsy (1959), Fiddler on the Roof (1964), and his own retrospective Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (1989; co-directed with Grover Dale). He was also one of the most successful “show doctors” the musical theatre has had, aiding, among

others, Wonderful Town (1953), Silk Stockings (1955), Funny Girl (1964), and most notably A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962) for which he supplied, with Stephen Sondheim’s help, the opening number, “Comedy Tonight.”
