ABSTRACT

It is impossible to create a science out of an art form, and it is folly to believe that a set of directorial rules can be established that, if followed, will lead one to success on the musical

stage. Indeed, directing musicals is a highly subjective and very personal experience. There are as many different ways to approach it as there are directors, and a number of different

methods can lead to success. What works for one director may not necessarily be appropriate for another. Personality, influences, education, experience, and goals all have a significant

impact upon the makeup of one’s directorial philosophy. What some

directors deem critical, other directors completely contradict or dismiss. Of course, more and varied philosophies beyond those included herein are certainly legitimate, and one is hard-pressed to find fault with a

method if it ultimately leads to success on stage. However, a number of stylistic and philosophical similarities are present among these professionals-similarities that appear to have merit and value in defining

the job description of the director of the musical. The following is a synthesis of the directors’ philosophies.
