ABSTRACT

In the remainder of the study we shall be concerned with the analysis of the industry structure of standard metropolitan areas (SMA's) in terms of the relationship between that structure and the "regional" situation of the SMA. The detailed and sometimes complex analyses to follow represent variations on our original theme, that "what a city does depends on where it is." We expect to add substance and refinement to this formulation by devising a classification of industry structure, analyzing variations among SMA's in industry structure according to this classification, and exploring interrelationships between the industry structure of the metropolitan area and activities carried on in the remainder of the economy.
