ABSTRACT

History records that Harry Vardon won six Open golf championships and that he missed a very short putt to win a seventh championship in 1902. Legend recounts that a gentleman watcher was so amused by this easy miss that Vardon was provoked to challenge him to a small wager that he could not make the same putt himself. Good sport that he was, Vardon even passed on a variety of verbal instructions on how best to make the putt, and suggested that a week should be long enough to put these into practice. One week later, an expectant crowd gathered around the green to watch Vardon collect on his wager.
