ABSTRACT

A second group of techniques is devoted to extending the services afforded by a given unit of supply. The approach in this instance is one of altering the supply, rather than demand, and the objective is to adjust the nature of the supply to the limitations of the consumer, whether these are of a seasonal, quality, quantity, or other nature. The four case descriptions selected to illustrate the range of these techniques come under the headings of "scheduling techniques" (multiple-purpose reservoir operation and underground water storage) and "other water-conserving and -meliorating techniques" (water-conserving land use and water-softening practices).
