Patrons: risks for violence associated with who goes out drinking and why Studies of the association between the barroom environment

In Chapter 2, we discussed the social functions of public drinking establishments and how functions such as prolonged socialising, meeting sexual or romantic partners and a time-out place for behaviour that may be outside the norm of what is usually tolerated are linked to an increased risk of aggression. These functions also shape the characteristics of the type of people who go out drinking, why they go, and the kinds of conflicts and aggression that are likely to occur.
