ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the recent history of psychological services in prisons, a case study of change leadership and finally an outline of some key challenges for the future. The focus is on developments within England and Wales. Since the 1990s, the provision of services in prisons has become something of a ‘mixed economy’ involving public, voluntary and private profit-making organisations and psychologists have been employed directly across all of these sectors. Public sector prisons are by far the largest single employer of psychologists within the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) but coverage here extends across prisons managed by public sector prisons and private providers too.
