ABSTRACT

The coordination, design and delivery of training for almost 50,000 staff in the Prison Service is a complex and challenging task. This is due in part to the diversity of roles that are undertaken by staff throughout the Service at prisons and headquarters. It is also due to the vast geographical spread of the organisation across England and Wales. Prison staff are broadly categorised into three main groups: operational staff, who have direct contact with prisoners on a daily basis, non-operational staff who generally support the administrative functions of a prison, and specialist staff, such as psychology, health care, education, trades staff and chaplaincy.
