ABSTRACT

Various instruments of international law provide guidance on how countries should respond to youth offending. These include instruments which are binding on states and those that represent non-binding statements of practice. These instruments of international law relate to all aspects of the youth justice system from early intervention, diversion, restorative justice, right to a fair trial and conditions in detention. Chapter 4 will provide an introduction to the principles of international law which relate to the youth justice system. These principles will be discussed in more detail in each of the relevant chapters throughout the rest of the book.
