ABSTRACT

Advanced skills teachers (ASTs) act as a link with the LEA in implementing strategies for promoting educational inclusion. They play a key role in raising the standards of teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools. ASTs contribute considerable expertise to supporting the professional development of trainee teachers, newly qualified teachers (NQTs) and established teachers, within their own schools, and in other schools, working in an outreach capacity. The AST spends 20 per cent of their time (equivalent to one day per week) working with other teachers.
