ABSTRACT

The globalisation of information systems, the standardisation of the mass media and the loss of a ‘sense of place’ – all of which happen despite the resurgence of separatism and nationalism – facilitate the export of control methods which offer a quick solution to growing problems of street crime. Private security systems, for example, have an obvious attraction. And now that Disneyland has been exported from California to France, the next stage might be Poland – reproducing not just the spectacle, but its distinctive system of proactive social control.
