ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, the concept of 3D CAD modelling has been discussed. However, modelling can be taken a step further with the introduction of the possibility of adding realistic information to the elements within the model. Using a building as an example, if we apply additional information such as the types of material, the costs, etc. to the different elements within the 3D CAD model, the generated model is then capable of replicating a real-life building scenario. The building prototype is replicated in 3D CAD not only visually, but with a high level of accuracy, containing actual building information within the model. This is more commonly referred to as Building Information Modelling (BIM). BIM also refers to constructing and managing a building information model over time. Moreover, there are various BIM software packages available which enable professionals to virtually build a facility before it is ever physically constructed.
