ABSTRACT

It is perfectly possible for children to learn without being taught, but they generally make much better progress when there is a more knowledgeable and experienced adult available to guide them through the complex processes involved. The clearer you are about what you are trying to achieve with the children and what you hope they will learn, the easier it is to formulate a teaching plan and approach to achieve these objectives. However, the best laid plans and most sophisticated teaching strategies available count for little unless you have taken careful account of the children's existing knowledge, understanding and motivation. Even if you technically meet the considerable number of standards listed below, your teaching will lack power and effectiveness unless you can translate lesson plans into creative teaching. In doing so you will need to draw on your enthusiasm, verve and imagination so that the children capture the same sense of urgency and excitement that shines out of you.
