ABSTRACT

The Method of Characteristics solutions applied in earlier chapters to the simulation of low amplitude air pressure transient propagation in building drainage and vent systems has been only one of the unsteady full bore or free surface flow applications of the methodology to solve the St Venant equations of continuity and momentum. The techniques developed are wholly consistent with those utilised in the broader pressure surge or historic waterhammer research areas where the MoC approach is the industry standard. Therefore it is useful to extend the treatment described so far to a wider range of airflow applications that share the same necessity to consider time dependent changes in operating condition.
