ABSTRACT

In 1922, the author's father was introduced by his landlady to the author's mother,Fraulein Rachel Schuber-Rosenkranz, a highly experienced and successful Hebrew teacher. She was born on 24 November 1890 in Gwozdiec, near Kolomea – where the author's father’s grandfather had been rabbi. The author's mother owed her education to the philanthropist Baron Maurice de Hirsch, best known for financing Jewish agricultural colonies in Argentina. Galicia had a large population ofhasidim who, traditionally, neglected the Jewish education of their daughters. Baron Hirsch helped toestablish schools for girls. The curriculum of the Baron Hirsch schools included mathematics, history, geography and at least three languages – German, Polish and Hebrew, including the HebrewBible. The Russians repeatedly occupied much of Galicia, including Gwozdiec, the author's mother’s birthplace.
