ABSTRACT

A changing operating environment is one of the constant factors that affects the management of voluntary sport organisations. Changes will occur inside and outside the organisation that will require ‘things to be different’ and managers will need to seek out management practices, procedures and services that need to change in order for the organisation to continue to operate effectively. In doing so, they are managing change. To be effective as a manager, it is necessary to recognise when change is desirable or inevitable and respond accordingly. For example, in recent times, NGBs are likely to have responded to at least ten new directives from stakeholder organisations such as UK Sport or their international federation, continually updated procedures in response to WADA, and handled the fallout from an athlete scandal. Clubs will have dealt with the increasing demands of legislation, seen their sport move away from amateurism and have attempted to obtain sponsorship.
