ABSTRACT

In order for voluntary sport organisations to be effective, managers need to understand the internal and external operating environments affecting the organisation. This includes having an understanding of where the organisation fits into the country’s sport system. This will allow managers to understand who they need to work with in order to be the most successful for their sport and their organisation. This is the purpose of this chapter, which will first set out the nature of organisations and then present and discuss factors in the operating environments that need to be taken into account when managing a voluntary sport organisation.
