ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues concerned with promoting physical literacy in the context of diversity. It sets out to examine how issues of diversity relate to the opportunities for, and limitations of, individuals becoming physically literate. It will define the nature of diversity and why some individuals and groups may experience less supportive contexts than others. The chapter will also examine strategies to promote physical literacy among these diverse groups (Pecek et al. 2008) and what significant others in physical activity settings should do to facilitate inclusive physical activity. International statements on entitlement are included as are issues around equality of opportunity. Three areas of discussion will be addressed. These are concerned with physical literacy in relation to gender, to sexual orientation, and to religion, race and culture.
