Far more significant is the duty that the Act imposes on government to ensure that any new law that is introduced is compatible with the rights and freedoms in the ECHR. This duty is overseen by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights, which scrutinizes each piece of legislation passing through Parliament.
