ABSTRACT
Chief constables are the chief officers of the UK police forces outside the police areas of London – the Commissioners of the City and Metropolitan forces have different constitutional and legislative histories. They are the highest rank of officer to hold the office of constable in their police force and are responsible to their police authority for its direction and control.
