ABSTRACT
In the past, what members of police forces were prohibited from doing was set out in a ‘discipline code’. This code described the unacceptable behaviour on which a charge and disciplinary hearing were based. More recently there has been a shift away from a code of discipline to a ‘code of conduct’ or ‘set of standards’. These standards describe the type of police behaviour that is acceptable and unacceptable in specific contexts.
