ABSTRACT
While preceding chapters debate the extent of illegal drug use amongst young people and, by implication, the centrality of illegal drugs in youthful popular culture, this chapter highlights examples of the contested nature of common and popular legal drug consumption. Childbirth is taken as an example of a site where the cultural and the physiological intersect and where popular cultural discourses compete with medico-technical discourses to define access to legal drugs.
