ABSTRACT

For this first publication of the original notes on the analyses of Grete, Rita. Inge and Erna, the notes have been transcribed. The vast majority of these were handwritten; only the sessions with Inge of November 1925 are available in typewritten form. In order to present the most authentic possible version, the spelling, punctuation and abbreviations have been retained. Square brackets have been used to indicate when a word was either illegible or had been crossed out and could not then be deciphered. Insertions have also been put in square brackets and the reference marker 1 has been added. An oblique line is used here to indicate the end of a line in the original and a vertical line is used to indicate the end of the page. The patients’ names have been replaced throughout with their pseudonym, and the following reference markers are used to indicate what appears in the original in each instance:

2 In the original, the patient’s first name. 3 In the original, the first letter of the patient’s first name. 4 In the original, the patient’s first name and surname. 5 In the original, the patient’s surname. 6 In the original, the first letter of the patient’s surname. 7 In the original, the patient’s first name and the first letter of
