Protest, social movements, and collective action: Conceptual clarifications and the subject of the book

A book that addresses the major theoretical perspectives in the field of social movements and political protest should begin by defining these terms because they are used in different and often ambiguous ways. The present chapter addresses these conceptual issues. We provide a critical analysis of extant definitions in the literature and propose definitions that encompass a rather wide range of phenomena.
