ABSTRACT

When dealing with pupils whose behaviour can be characterised as belonging to Category A, teachers need to draw on their Legitimate or Referent power. These powers are based on the understanding that teachers are officially designated to see that pupils’ rights are protected, and that they are acting in the best interests of all the pupils in the class. Assuming that all pupils are in Category A implies that they may, at worst, only have to be reminded when their behaviour is preventing others from feeling comfortable or from learning effectively. They may also need to be made aware if they are not acting to help their peers behave in a way that is respectful of the rights of others.
