ABSTRACT

Chapter 16 is concerned with the effectiveness of specific interventions. Here, Carol Hedderman rehearses recent developments relating to the effectiveness of sentencing and reviews the research findings regarding the impact of imprisonment, rehabilitations (probation orders), community punishment (community service orders) and fines. She also addresses the emerging evidence on newer sentences such as curfew orders and drug treatment and testing orders and discusses the crucial role that probation might play in working towards an improvement in effectiveness in relation to the new sentences introduced under the Criminal Justice Act 2003.
