ABSTRACT
The primary purpose of taking notes is to aid memory. Whether the notes are taken from a lecture, a book, or a medium such as a film or television programme, they will form a central part of your study and you will have to invest a great deal of t ime in them. However, it is important to remember that you cannot hope to retain everything that you read, hear or discuss ; cons ider instead h o w to make notes that wi l l remind you of the most pert inent facts. There should be sufficient information included in the notes to allow you to reconstruct the rest of
the material, or at least enable you to locate what you may need in the original texts the next time.
