ABSTRACT

In the last two chapters we have discussed different approaches to the policing of hate crime, many of which represent both recent developments and models of good practice in this area. However, hate crime poses rather a unique and complex challenge to the police, and the introduction of new approaches to combat it is not a guarantee that ‘success’ will be achieved. In this chapter I shall examine some of the key problems and challenges that the police face in their attempts to effectively respond to hate crime, and will offer some suggestions for overcoming these.
